Interview Tips
Interview is basically a structured conversation between interviewer and the candidate (interviewee).
The aim of the interview is to gathered specific information about the candidate, such as professional competence, knowledge, previous experiences, communication skills, non-verbal cues (non-verbal signals that indicate a person’s feelings or intentions), includes body language, facial expression, and tone of voice.
In addition to technical skills, and knowledge a candidate must possess interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. This includes willingness to accept challenges, the capability to take initiative, responsibility, and quick decisions, nurture interpersonal relationships. Effective team behaviour (capability to work as a team member), a supportive nature (helps team members when needed), problem-solving abilities, and leadership qualities. These attributes contribute significantly to the success of team and the organization as a whole.
General Preparation
- Know the Syllabus: Be thoroughly familiar with the syllabus and subjects relevant to the job.
- Current Affairs: Stay updated with the latest news and events, especially those related to India and your field.
- Mock Interviews: Practice with mock interviews to get a feel of the real scenario.
- Read Job Descriptions: Understand the job requirements and align your preparation accordingly.
- Resume: Be ready to discuss everything mentioned in your resume. Never put anything on resume, which you can’t not explain easily.
Personal Presentation
- Dress Formally: Wear formal and appropriate attire. For men, a suit and tie; for women, a saree or other formal attire. Dress sense always matters, better fitting of clothes give you more confidence.
- Grooming: Ensure neat grooming, such as a clean shave for and well-managed hair.
- Perfumes or Cosmetics: Ensure if you use perfume/cream or any other cosmetics it should be very light.
- Smells: Avoid body smells due to dirty socks, and body sweating.
- Punctuality: Arrive at least 15-30 minutes early.
- Body Language: Maintain good posture, make eye contact, and use appropriate hand gestures.
- Smile: A genuine smile can convey confidence and friendliness.
- Be Relaxed: Fill natural, no one like any artificial gestures
Psychological Preparation
- Stay Calm: Practice relaxation techniques to stay calm and composed.
- Positive Mindset: Maintain a positive and optimistic attitude, in all situation.
- Self-Belief: Believe in your abilities and preparation.
- Visualization: Visualize a successful interview to boost confidence.
- Stress Management: Develop strategies to manage stress effectively.
Well Manage Documentation & Resume
- Organise Documents: Ensure all necessary documents are organised and readily accessible.
- Resume: Prepare detail resume what you have done in past. Highlight the thinks where you like to invite interviewer attention. Understand how it is related to job profile.
During the Interview
- First Impressions: Greet the interviewers politely with genuine smile.
- Confidence: Speak confidently but not arrogantly.
- Clarity: Be clear and concise in your answers.
- Listen Carefully: Pay attention to the questions being asked.
- Pause Before Answering: Take a moment to think before you answer.
- Answering trick: Practice a smart trick of answering, so that the next question to be generated from your answer only.
Subject Knowledge
- Core Subjects: Be well-versed in your core subjects and technical knowledge.
- Practical Applications: Understand the practical applications of your technical knowledge.
- Projects and Internships: Be ready to discuss any projects or internships in detail.
- Technical Terminology: Be familiar with and able to explain technical terms.
Behavioural Aspects
- Honesty: Be honest if you don’t know an answer.Don’t worry, it’s natural, don’t try if you have not heard about it (Just say I don’t know much about it)
- Adaptability: Show your willingness to learn and adapt.
- Leadership Skills: Provide examples where you have demonstrated leadership skills, or be ready to take a lead.
- Teamwork: Highlight your ability to work well in a team, and group behaviours.
- Problem-Solving: Interviewer may create situation for you. Discuss how you approach and solve the given problems. Always focus on root cause of problem and related basic things.
Current Affairs and General Knowledge
- Political Awareness: Know the current political scenario in India. Never show your inclination towards any political party. Be neutral as an bureaucrat and discuss positive actions taken across the political parties.
- Economic Policies: Understand India’s economic policies and their implications.
- Social Issues: Be aware of major social issues and government measures to address them, be on positive side, because no one can resolve big problems in overnight.
- International Relations: Have knowledge of India’s relationships with other countries.
- Important Personalities: Be aware of key figures in various fields form across the globe.
Personal Background and Hobbies
- Personal Introduction: Prepare a brief introduction about yourself.
- Hobbies and Interests: Be prepared to discuss your hobbies and interests. Don’t create your hobbies just for the sack of interview, be honest.
- Achievements: Highlight your key achievements and learnings from them.
- Lessons Learn from Failures: Be ready to discuss your failures and what you learned from them.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity towards different cultures and traditions. Read about diverse Indian culture and understand the richness of their cultures.
Situational Questions
- Scenario-Based Questions: Prepare for hypothetical situations relevant to the job, and try to solve them in positive manner.
- Ethical Dilemmas: Be ready to discuss how you would handle ethical issues.
- Conflict Resolution: Explain how you manage conflicts and difficult situations, practice by creating hypothetical conflict situations, and resolve with best resolutions.
- Decision Making: Provide examples of your decision-making process. It should be systematic step-by-step process, and it must resolve the problem without harm to all interested parties.
- Work Under Pressure: Illustrate your ability to work under pressure with examples. This might be your litmus test to know about your mental resilience and capability to handle type of work in adverse situation.
Post-Interview Etiquette
- Ask Questions: Have a couple of insightful questions ready to ask the interviewers. It must be related to your job profile, or may be related to place of posting if you got selected. Never ask personal questions, about interviewer.
- Say Thank You Sir/Ma’am: Say thank you with genuine smile to interviewer to express your gratitude.
- Follow-Up: Follow up politely if you do not hear back within the expected timeframe.
- Reflect on Feedback: If you receive feedback, reflect on it and work on the areas of improvement.
